Denotation and Connotation

Denotation is what you see like costume, makeup, props and connotation is what the meaning is. What they mean to you. For example if there is a poster from Usual Suspects, the denotations would be, they are wearing leather jackets some of them, they look greasy, they’re definitely getting a mug shot, the tallest guy in the middle. The denotations would be they were involved in some crime, maybe connect them to the mafia and the tallest guy is in the middle because he is the most important, the leader of the group.

The Second Camera Lesson

In our second camera lesson we started filming small takes, creating a very scene. We would do everything we did in the first camera lesson before we filmed. We chose to film me going to a table picking up my phone looking at it and walking away again. We did a couple of close-ups, a form of over the shoulder shot of my phone, and a half shot. We learnt about the 180 degree rule that you are not aloud to cross. For example if to people were having a conversation and you were filming a 180 degrees around them you couldn’t suddenly step to the other side and film because it would seem as though they were a completely other place or had switched positions.

First Camera Lesson

This was our first lesson where we actually got to use and work with the cameras. It was really to get the basics of the camera, how it works and how to install it before use. We started by making sure the tripod was the right height. Afterwards we would check that the camera is straight by making sure that the bubble was in the middle of the spirit level and locking it in that position. To put the battery in, we would put it in the back of the camera in the hole and pushing it down until we heard a click, and the push a button to make It pop out again. Next step was to check the white balance by putting a piece of white paper in front of the lens and pushing down a button until it installed it. To make sure that you get a clear and not blurry shot we would zoom in on an object in the shot focus on it and then zoom out to the preferred shot.
